Grant Wiggins and Jay McThige created the Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units. Understanding by Design or UbD was created for individuals who desire to improve their designing skills. The UbD method is meant for students to have long term achievement gains and for teachers to understand concepts that can be transferred and processed to students while giving them multiple opportunities to apply their learning in meaningful ways. Understanding by design has three stages of "backward design" created to plan curriculum units that would help include desired understanding and performance tasks that require the students to transfer their learning.
The first stage of UbD is Identifying Desired Results, which is about setting clear and specific learning goals. The second stage of Ubd is Determining Acceptable Evidence, which is about creating effective assessments that are designed to match the learning objectives from stage one. The third stage of UbD is about Creating the Learning Plan, which gives students the opportunity to explore the content of the course.
The big idea of this workshop is to use the UbD method to design a course that focuses on helping students understand a course's important ideas and to transfer it to new situations.
My name is Lydia S., I hold a bachelor's degree in Middle Childhood Education with concentrations in Science and Social Studies with a minor in Deaf Studies and a master's degree in Instructional Design and Learning Technologies. My unique skills have allowed me to design content that keeps the needs of diverse learners in mind.
A little personal information about me is that I have been happily married to my amazing husband, Alexander, for eight years. We have two fat cats named Camden and Oliver, and we recently adopted a puppy named Mikko. We enjoy spending time with family, trips to the beach, traveling, and diving into the pages of a good book.
To complete this workshop, participants will need to have access to a laptop or computer, access to the internet, access to Microsoft Word, and an account on YouTube.
Participants are encouraged to purchase the following books to help aid them in completing the workshop:
"Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units" by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe
"Understanding by Design Guide to Advanced Concepts in Creating and Reviewing Units" by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe
To complete this workshop, participants will begin by downloading the UbD template. Once they have downloaded the template, they will then read through an overview of stage #1, watch the corresponding video explaining stage #1 of the template, answer the stage #1 assessment questions, and complete stage #1 of the template for the course they are designing.
Next, participants will move on to stage #2 of the UbD template. They will then read through an overview of stage #2, watch the corresponding video explaining stage #2 of the template, answer the stage #2 assessment questions, and complete stage #2 of the template for the course they are designing.
Finally, participants will move to stage #3 of the UbD template. They will then read through an overview of stage #3, watch the corresponding video explaining stage #3 of the template, answer the stage #3 assessment questions, and complete stage #3 of the template for the course they are designing. Once they have completed the workshop and template, participants will need to submit a copy of the template for the course they designed for feedback.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to identify and discuss all three stages of UbD.
To demonstrate your understanding complete all three stages of the UbD template and write a reflection on your strengths, weaknesses and how likely you are to use this method for designing future courses. When you are finished, upload your template in the drop box below.
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to summarize the concept of the "big idea" and why it is essential to designing effective units.
To demonstrate your understanding create a brochure where you will summarize the concept of the big idea discussed by Wiggins and McTighe in stage #1 of the UbD template. Once you have summarized the big idea you will then write the big idea of your unit. Please be sure to make the big idea in plain language that others who have never taken your course can understand. Please submit your brochure in the drop box below.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to provide colleagues with recommendations on how to use UbD to design courses.
To demonstrate your understanding write a newspaper article in which you are giving a colleague advice on how to use the UbD method. Assume your colleague knows nothing about UbD and give them recommendations on the benefits of this design method and how they can incorporate this method into their teaching practices. Please upload your article in the drop box below.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to integrate the six facets of understanding to write performance tasks.
To demonstrate your understanding complete a one-page write-up of what the six facets of understanding are and discuss how the performance tasks you created in your unit align with the six facets. Once you have completed the assignment, please upload it to the drop box below.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to examine all three stages of UbD and determine if each stage aligns with one another.
To demonstrate your understanding, please create and post a flip grid video where you will discuss how the three stages of your template align. Please provide specific details of the course you are designing and provide evidence of how your course aligns. Please follow the link listed to post your video: https://flipgrid.com/seigrist2534
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to design effective rubrics.
To demonstrate your understanding create your own performance task activity and then design a rubric to assess your students. When you are finished with your performance task and rubric, please post both to the drop box below.
