Stage#3 of the UbD template is designed to focus on students and give them an understanding of the objectives and a clear overview of the class. Stage #3 should ensure that it aligns with all elements of Stage #1 and Stage #2. The authors state that all educational experiences should be effective and engaging.
Additionally, they came up with an acronym to serve as a guide to ensure stage #3 is effective and engaging. The acronym they use is "WHERETO." The "W" represents where and why? Students will understand where the lesson is going and why. The "H" represent hook & hold, which means the hook is what grabs the student's attention at the beginning of the lesson and holds their attention throughout, the first "E" represents equipping students with the experiences they need to meet performance goals. The "R" represents giving students the opportunity to rethink the big idea, reflect on the progress they have made, and to revise their work. The second "E" represents building an opportunity for students to evaluate their work. The "T" represents tailoring the classroom to the specific needs of the students in the class, and the "O" represents organization which means the unit should be organized in a way that maximizes effectiveness and engagement. The authors note that WHERETO is not meant to be a recipe to follow but rather a tool to use for brainstorming.
Below is a screenshot video created using the software Camtasia. The video discusses stage #3 of the UbD template, where I will provide a detailed description with the actual document and will discuss how to use the template and what information goes with what section.
